This gorgeous messy bun beanie features the cutest braided cables and rib details! It is the perfect addition to your winter hat collection and so much fun to work up. Enjoy!
Materials
80 grams of any worsted weight yarn
Size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles
Size 9 (5.5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles
Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors
Gauge
16 stitches and 22 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch worked in the round
Abbreviations
CO: cast on
k: knit
p: purl
*..*: repeat the instructions in the asterisks the designated amount
st(s): stitch(es)
c4b: cable 4 back (see pattern notes)
c4f: cable 4 front (see pattern notes)
k2tog: knit two stitches together
p2tog: purl 2 stitches together
k3tog: knit 3 stitches together
f/o: finish off
Sizing Notes
This pattern is designed to fit babies-adults and distributed into three sizes that are written as S(M, L). Each size measures approximately 16(18, 21) inches when finished. Each size will fit many heads, so I recommend choosing the size that best suits your positive/negative ease preferences. Sample pictured is size L on a 20” head.

This beanie is worked in the round, so be sure to place a stitch at the beginning of every round.
You can use any method you would like to work in the round. I personally prefer using a 16” circular needle, then switching to magic loop/DPNs for the crown of the beanie.
This beanie is designed to be a bit slouchy, but instructions are provided if you would like to alter this.
c4b: Slip two stitches from the left hand needle onto your cable needle, and hold in back. Knit the next two stitches normally. Lastly, knit the two stitches from the cable needle.
c4f: Slip two stitches from the left hand needle onto your cable needle, and hold in front. Knit the next two stitches normally. Lastly, knit the two stitches from the cable needle.
Brim
Using smaller needles
CO 60(72, 84) sts, and place marker to work in the round
Rounds 1- 5(8, 10): *k2, p2* around.
Proceed to Body
Body
Using larger needles
Round 1
*k2, p2, k6, p2* around.
Round 2
*k2, p2, c4f, k2, p2* around.
Round 3
*k2, p2, k6, p2* around.
Round 3
*k2, p2, k2, c4b, p2*. around
Repeat rounds 1-4 a 4(5, 6) more times, for a total of 5(6, 7) repeats.
Proceed to Crown Instructions

*k2, p2tog, k1, k2tog, k2tog, k1, p2tog* around.

*k2tog, p1, k2tog, k2tog, p1* around.

Bind off all sts, and weave in ends.
Most hats are fine without blocking, since they will naturally shape to fit the recipient’s head over time. However, feel free to spritz the beanie, and place it on a head form to shape.
