Efficient Pullover | Free Crochet Pattern

This bulky-weight crochet pullover is designed with the beginner in mind but is perfect for *any* maker’s wardrobe. It is the coziest pullover you’ll ever wear, and is one of the quickest you’ll ever make!

Materials

  • Approximately 820 (945, 1100, 1250, 1360) yards or 600 (690, 800, 900, 1000) grams of any bulky weight #5 yarn. Samples use WeCrochet Billow in Tea Rose. Find it HERE.

  • 10.00 mm crochet hook

  • Ruler to check gauge

  • Scissors and yarn needle for finishing

Gauge

In order to ensure the pullover will fit its intended recipient, I highly suggest checking your gauge.

8 stitches by 4 rows = 4 by 4 inches in double crochet, worked flat

Abbreviations

ch: chain

dc: double crochet

sc: single crochet

ea: each

st(s): stitch(es)

sl st: slip stitch

rem: remaining

FO: finish off

Choosing Your Size

  • This oversized pullover is written in five sizes, distributed as XS (S, M, L, XL). Each size is designed to fit bust sizes 28-36 (36-44, 44-52, 52-60, 60-68) inches, with 6-14 inches of positive ease per size. The finished bust measurements are 42 (50, 58, 66, 74) inches. I recommend choosing the size that best suits your negative/positive ease preferences.

  • When finished, this pullover measures 22 inches long from the shoulder to the hem. Note that the length is easily customizable but that any changes made to the pattern will affect your required yardage.

Pattern Notes

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each row/round does not count as a stitch. When working in rounds, the slst doesn’t count as a stitch either.

Front

ch 44 (52, 60, 68, 76)

Row 1: dc in the third ch from the hook, and in ea ch across. 42 (50, 58, 66, 74) sts

Rows 2-22: ch 2 and turn. dc in ea st across. 42 (50, 58, 66, 74) sts

To make the pullover shorter/longer, simply repeat Row 2 less/more times. Note how many rows you worked on the front panel so that the back panel will match.

Do not FO, proceed to Back Instructions

Back

Setup Row: ch 2 and turn. dc in ea of the next 13 (17, 21, 24, 28) sts. Ch and skip 16 (16, 16, 18, 18) sts, then dc in ea of the last 13 (17, 21, 24, 28) sts of the row.

Row 1: ch 2 and turn. dc in ea st and ch across. 42 (50, 58, 66, 74) sts

Rows 2-22: ch 2 and turn. dc in ea st across. 42 (50, 58, 66, 74) sts

If you decreased/increased the length of the front, be sure to do the same for the back. Always exclude the setup row in counting.

FO, and proceed to Seaming Instructions

Seaming

Feel free to substitute your preferred seaming method for this technique.

Fold the pullover so that the neck hole is at the top and the front/back panels are aligned.

Using the mattress stitch, seam up one side of the pullover until 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) inches remain. Secure the tail, then repeat these instructions for the opposite side of the pullover.

Seaming is complete; weave in any ends.

Proceed to Collar Instructions

Collar

The collar addition is completely optional, but provides a clean finish.

Join the yarn to any st along the neck.

Round 1: place 1 sc st in ea st around the skipped and foundation ch sts of the Setup Row. Place a few sts along the shoulders if necessary.

FO, weave in any ends, and proceed to Hem Instructions

Hem

The hem addition is completely optional, but provides a clean finish.

Join the yarn to any st along the foundation chain/final row of either the front/back

Round 1: place 1 sc st in ea st around.

Rounds 2-3: ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st around.

FO, weave in any ends, and proceed to Sleeve Instructions

Sleeves

Join the yarn to any dc st along either armhole.

Round 1: ch 2, and evenly dc 24 (28, 32, 36, 40) sts around the armhole. ss to the first dc st. 24 (28, 32, 36, 40) sts

Rounds 2-15 (15, 17, 17, 19): ch 2 and turn. dc in ea st around. ss to the first dc st.

24 (28, 32, 36, 40) sts

If you would like to make your sleeves shorter/longer, simply work less/more rounds.

Final Round: ch 2 and turn. *dc in ea of the next two sts, dc2tog* around. ss to the first dc st. 18 (21, 24, 27, 30) sts

Cuff: ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st around. Repeat for a total of three rounds.

Repeat these instructions for Sleeve 2, then proceed to Finishing Instructions

Finishing

Weave in any ends you may have remaining. If you decide to block your pullover, I recommend pinning it out on blocking mats gently, spritz with water, and either steam block or let air dry. The samples pictured are not blocked.
