Writer's picture: Amy Kate SutherlandAmy Kate Sutherland

This cozy cardi is the perfect winter-spring or summer-fall transition piece! It features the simplest faux lace stitch pattern, worsted weight yarn, and a loose gauge to ensure a quick project with a great result. Enjoy!

Materials

  • 3(4, 5, 5, 6) cakes of Hobbii Lollipop, or approximately 1015(1270, 1530, 1785, 2065) yards or 530(665, 800, 935, 1080) grams of another comparable worsted weight yarn. Sample uses Lollipop Melange in Denver(13)

  • 7.0 mm crochet hook

  • Ruler to check gauge

  • Scissors and yarn needle

Gauge

In order to ensure the cardigan will fit its intended recipient, I highly suggest checking your gauge.

Pattern Notes

  • Find the featured yarn here!

  • Each ch 1 space counts as a stitch, as does the sc/dc sts.

  • The ch 3 at the beginning of the dc rows counts as a dc and a ch 1 space.

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of the sc rows counts as a sc and a ch 1 space.

Choosing Your Size

  • This oversized cardigan is written in five sizes, distributed as XS (S, M, L, XL). Each size is designed to fit bust sizes 28-36 (36-44, 44-52, 52-60, 60-68) inches, with 6-14 inches of positive ease per size. The finished bust measurements are 40 (50, 58, 66, 74) inches. I recommend choosing the size that best suits your negative/positive ease preferences.

  • When finished, the cardigan measures 24 inches long. Note that this is easily customizable.

Use these instructions (if desired) to modify any of the sizes or make a gauge swatch.

Construction

This cardigan is worked in five pieces consisting of two front panels, a back panel, and two sleeve panels. Once all panels are created, you will seam them together by seaming the shoulders, then attaching the sleeves, then seaming from the hem all the way to the sleeve cuffs.

Lay all the pieces flat with the wrong sides facing you. Seam the shoulders and sleeves, then fold the front panels over and seam the sleeves and sides of the cardigan.

Refer to this tutorial if needed: https://youtu.be/XWd_VO62fjA

Seaming is complete; weave in any ends.

Proceed to Border Instructions

Border

The border addition is completely optional, but provides a clean finish.

Join the yarn to any st along the bottom of the back panel.

Round 1: place 1 sc st in ea st along the bottom of the front/back panels, and 2 sc sts per row up and around the front collar. Place 3 sc sts in ea corner. ss to the first sc st.

Rounds 2-3: ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st around the border, placing 3 sc sts per corner. ss to the first sc st.

FO, weave in any ends, and proceed to Finishing Instructions

Finishing

Weave in any ends you may have remaining. If you decide to block your cardigan, I recommend pinning it out on blocking mats gently, spritz with water, and either steam block or let air dry. The sample pictured is not blocked.
