Worsted Satisfaction Socks | Free Pattern

These crocheted socks are so quick and cozy! I hope you enjoy making a fun pair for yourself or a loved one.

Materials

  • 100 grams of any worsted weight yarn

  • 4.5mm crochet hook

  • 5.0mm crochet hook

  • Scissors, yarn needles, locking stitch marker

Gauge

4 stitches and 4 rounds = 1 inch in single crochet worked in the round

Abbreviations

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

ea: each

blo: back loop only

sk: skip

sc2tog: single crochet two stitches together

st(s): stitch(es)

*...*: repeat the instructions in the asterisks

Sizing Notes

  • This sock ruler is extremely helpful for crocheting socks in any size.

  • This pattern is written for sizes small(medium, large) and are designed to fit a 7(8, 9) inch foot circumference. Note that crochet fabric is more dense and tight than knit fabric. I suggest choosing the size that best suits the amount of negative/positive ease you prefer for socks.

Pattern Notes

  • Find the yarn featured in this pattern here.

  • These are my favorite sock blockers.

  • This pattern is worked in a spiral, so be sure to mark the first stitch of every round with a stitch marker.

  • This pattern provides instructions for an afterthought heel. If you would like to substitute a different heel, simply omit the heel instructions, and substitute your chosen heel after completing the leg.

Helpful Tutorials

Cuff

Using smaller hook

Ch 9

Row 1

Work one sc into the second ch from the hook, and in ea ch across. 15 sts

Row 2

Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the first st, sc in the blo of ea of the next 13 sts, sc in the last st. 15 sts

Repeat Row 2 until your cuff measures 6.5(7.5, 8.5) inches long without stretching.

Joining

ch 1 and turn, then sl st the foundation ch and final row sts together. Flip the cuff right side out, so that the slip stitch row is on the inside of the cuff. Finally, ch 1 and turn.

Leg

Using larger hook

Leg Setup Round

Evenly place 28(32, 36) sts around the cuff

Round 1

sc in ea st around.

Repeat Round 1 until you reach your desired length.

Heel Setup

If you are substituting a different heel, omit these instructions and follow the instructions for your chosen heel.

Note: Some crocheters found it helpful to work the foundation single crochet stitch for the heel setup, instead of chaining the stitches. Keep the st counts the same, and find a tutorial here.

Setup Round 1

ch 14(16, 18) and sk 14(16, 18) sts. sc in the last 14(16, 18) sts of the round.

Setup Round 2

sc in ea st and ch around. I recommend working in the back of the ch sts

Foot

Round 1

sc in ea st around. 48(56, 64) sts

For Afterthought heel

Repeat Round 1 until the foot measures 4 inches from your desired length, measured from the heel setup chain.

For substituted heel

Work Round 1 until the foot measures 2 inches from your desired length, measured from the base of the heel.

Toe

Rounds 1, 3, 4, 6, 7

sc in ea st around

Round 2

*sc 2, sc2tog* around.

Round 5

*sc 1, sc2tog* around.

Round 8

*sc2tog* around. 6(7, 8) sts

f/o, and weave through the remaining sts to close the hole.

Afterthought Heel

Remember to place a stitch marker.

Setup Round 1

Join yarn to any st along the skipped leg sts from the Heel Setup Round. sc in ea st, placing one extra st in ea side. 30(34, 38) sts

Setup Round 2

sc in ea st round, while working a sc2tog where you picked up the extra stitches. 28(32, 36) sts

Rounds 1-8

Repeat Rounds 1-8 of the Toe Instructions, and close the hole.

Finishing

Cut any attached yarn, and weave in your ends.

My favorite way to finish a pair of socks is to wet block them. Fill a sink or small tub with lukewarm water and add some wool wash if desired. Insert the socks into the water, and let sit for about 5 minutes. Place the socks on sock blockers appropriate to your size, and let them air dry.

Lastly, enjoy and show off your beautiful handmade socks, or gift them to someone special. If desired, share them on Instagram using the #satisfactionsocks and #crochetsocks tag @thegracefultangle!
