Basic Beginner Dishcloth | Crochet Tutorial

This crocheted dishcloth is the first in my Spring Dishcloth Collection! This is the perfect dishcloth for beginner and advanced crocheters alike. Just a warning though-everyone will want one!

Materials:

Gauge:

It is not necessary to achieve a certain gauge for this project, but if you want the same dimensions as the sample I suggest checking.

7 stitches by 7 rows = 2 inches in single crochet, worked flat

Abbreviations:

MC: main color

CC: contrast color

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

ea: each

st(s): stitch(es)

f/o: finish off

Pattern Notes:

  • Find the yarn used for the sample here.

  • Follow along with the full video tutorial: https://youtu.be/P0GLfIHqcAY

  • This dishcloth is made by creating a single crochet square, then adding an optional border for a neat finish.

  • The ch 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch. This is the turning chain, and allows the edges to be nice and straight.

  • When worked to pattern, your dishcloth will measure approximately 8 inches wide by 8 inches tall.

  • Feel free to adjust the size of your dishcloth by chaining less/more sts to make it narrower/wider. Simply work sc rows until it is square.

Dishcloth:

Using MC

Ch 25

Row 1: sc in the second ch from the hook and in ea ch across. (24 sts)

Rows 2-25: ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st across. (24 sts)

f/o, and weave in your ends.

If you’d like to add a border, proceed to Finishing Instructions

Finishing:

Using CC

Attach a new strand of yarn to any stitch on row 25. Sc in each st, and sc 3 sts in ea corner. On the sides, place one single crochet stitch in every row you worked. Continue until you reach the first stitch you made.

f/o, and weave in any ends remaining.

Enjoy your new dishcloth!
