Mortar Dishcloth | Free Pattern

This dishcloth features such a fun stitch and (at least!) two contrasting colors. Choose however many colors you’d like in your favorite cotton yarn and create a set!




Materials

  • 15 grams or 35 yards each of any DK weight cotton yarn. Sample uses Originally Lovely Yarn Pima in Penny(MC) and Shell(CC)

  • 5 grams or 12 yards of the same yarn as the body of dishcloth for the border. Sample uses Powder

  • 4.5mm crochet hook

  • Scissors and a yarn needle

Gauge


4 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch in pattern


Abbreviations

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

sk: skip

sp: space

ea: each

st(s): stitch(es)

MC: main color

CC: contrast color

BC: border color

spdc: spike double crochet (insert hook into base of sc from previous row, dc)

Pattern Notes

  • Find the yarn featured in this pattern here.

  • This dishcloth is worked flat, so be sure to turn your work after each row.

  • To modify the width of this dishcloth, ch any multiple of four plus one.

Pattern

Ch 29

Row 1 (MC)

sc in the second ch from the hook, and in ea st across

Row 2 (MC)

ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st across.

Row 3 (CC)

ch 1 and turn. *sc in the next two sts, spdc in the next two sts* across.

Row 4 (CC)

ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st across

Row 5 (MC)

ch 1 and turn. *spdc in the next two

sts, sc in the next two sts* across.

Row 6 (MC)

ch 1 and turn. sc in ea st across.

Rows 7-28

Repeat Rows 3-6

Row 29 (BC)

Continuing from the last row, join BC. ch 1 and turn. sc evenly around the dishcloth.

Place three sts in ea corner, and aim to place the same amount of sts on ea side.


Finishing

Pull through the last st, cut yarn, and weave in any ends.

Dishcloths aren’t typically in need of blocking, but feel free to do so. If you chose a 100% cotton yarn, I recommend simply washing these dishcloths in the washer and dryer just like clothes. They will last for years to come!
