The Alternate Dishcloth | Free Crochet Pattern

This crocheted dishcloth is the second in my Spring Dishcloth Collection! This is the perfect dishcloth for the beginner who is looking for a standard single crochet dishcloth...with a little twist. Consider this the perfect alternate!

Materials:

  • Approximately 30 grams/60 yards of any cotton yarn (sample uses WeCrochet Dishie in Kenai)

  • Optional: Approximately 2 grams/5 yards of any contrast color yarn for the border (sample uses WeCrochet Dishie in White)

  • Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn Needle to weave in ends

  • Ruler to check gauge if desired

Gauge:

It is not necessary to achieve a certain gauge for this project, but if you want the same dimensions as the sample I suggest checking.

8 stitches by 8 rows = 2 inches in single crochet, in pattern

Abbreviations:

MC: main color

CC: contrast color

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

sk: skip

ea: each

*...*: repeat the instructions in the asterisks

st(s): stitch(es)

f/o: finish off

Pattern Notes:

  • Find the yarn used for the sample here.

  • Follow along with the full video tutorial: https://youtu.be/R_nRZs_yy-4

  • This dishcloth is made by creating a square, then adding an optional border for a neat finish.

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch. This is the turning chain, and will allow the edges to remain nice and straight.

  • When worked to pattern, your dishcloth will measure approximately 8 inches wide by 8 inches tall.

  • Feel free to adjust the size of your dishcloth by chaining less/more stitches to make it narrower/wider. Simply repeat row 2 until it is square.

Dishcloth:

Ch 27

Row 1: in the third ch from the hook, work 2 sc. *sk one ch, sc 2 in next ch* until the end of the row. (26 sts)

Row 2: ch 2 and turn. sk the first st, work 2 sc into the next st *skip next st, sc 2 in next st* until the end of the row. (26 sts)

Rows 3-27: repeat row 2

f/o and proceed to finishing

Finishing:

Using CC

Attach a new strand of yarn to any stitch on row 25. Sc in each st, and sc 3 sts in ea corner. On the sides, place one single crochet stitch in every row you worked. Continue until you reach the first stitch you made.

f/o, and weave in any ends remaining.

Enjoy your new dishcloth!

Until next time,

Amy Kate
